It seems as though in America many people walk around with a sense of entitlement based on how they define themselves. I overheard 2 people talking on the gateway while boarding the plane this morning. The man was telling the woman with him that there was a mini security checkpoint at an airport and he got stopped and had his bag searched. She responded didn’t you tell them who you were. To which he replied yeah but it didn’t matter, I wasn’t president yet…So I’m thinking I don’t care what you’re the president of, how much you paid for your flight or where you are sitting on that flight. You have to comply with security measures just like the rest of us. Anyway my point is not to complain about this guy but to prove a point that Americans have an inflated sense of self-worth. Self-worth can be a good but I realized that our self-worth needs to be defined by who we are in Christ. Not what company we are the president of, what class we fly, what car we drive, what clothes we wear or even what church we go to. How much money our church has, how many small groups we have and how big they are, or our church attendance… I think you get my point.
I was looking for an appropriate scripture about our identity in Christ and though there are so many I realized the best one to sum it up is Isaiah 43:1 “…Fear not for I have redeemed you, I have called you by your name, YOU ARE MINE”... What else do we need to know?
If you don’t know who you are I can guarantee you are not your style, your school, your major, your job, or any other crazy thing we have decided defines us.
So bottom line; you are child, scratch that you are a beloved, cherished handcrafted child of God . He loves you despite anything…you caught that? ANYTHING you have ever done…EVER.
So, don’t you know who I am?
I do…
